Cars you never knew existed part 2: The Lamborghini 5-95 Zagato

SO WHAT EXACTLY IS THIS?

This is the Lamborghini Zagato 5-95, a limited run built to celebrate Lambo’s 50th and Zagato’s 95th anniversary.

SO THEIR HISTORY TOGETHER GOES A LONG WAY, I PRESUME.

You’ll be forgiven for thinking so, but no. In fact, the only other collaboration between these two is the 1996 Zagato raptor concept, and the 1999 Canto Zagato. Both of which of course, never saw the light of day.

SO IF THERE IS SO LITTLE HISTORY, WHY DID THEY MAKE THIS?

It only really exists due to the car collector Albert Spiess, who commissioned the car. No one really knows why. What we do know, however is the this car costs well over $1 million USD, which considering it was based on a Galllardo, which you could have bought for a fraction of the price- is quite the price tag.

RIGHT. AND THIS IS A ONE-OFF OR WHAT?

Thing is, no one actually knows how many were made, according to some sources, 3, however most sources state that 5 were made- not that we can say either for sure. It should be noted that this is just for the coupe variant though.

THERE’S A SPYDER VARIANT?

Yep, there’s a spyder variant, which interestingly, debuted as a static image on Zagato’s website. Literally, we were only given 1 image. For these, we have absolutely no idea how many were made, except it would almost certainly be no more than the coupe. Even more bizarrely, the spyder variant was revealed as recent as 2018, some 4 years after the coupe. Still, not as long as the Maserati Zagato monstro barchetta- revealed 7 years after the coupe.

SO WHAT’S IT BASED ON? ITS BASED ON SOMETHING ISN’T IT?

Its based on the LP-570-4 Gallardo superleggera, upon where I say based, is mechanically identical.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT IT

As you heard previously, the Zagato raptor concept was the only other collaboration, and apparently, some details of this design of this recalls it, such its double bubble roof and roof scoop. Other else… um… yeah. Much heritage. Anyway, to be honest with you, It must be brilliant. The Gallardo superleggera is a amazing piece of kit, and this is just the same in a different suit. Thing is, i’m still not sure anyone could justify the million dollar price tag- some 5 times more than the gallardo. In fact, by the time the spyder had come out, the huracan had already been out for 4 years. In terms of a car, It doesn’t really make any sense. If you look at it singularly however, as a piece of art -which is what it is- its absolutely brilliant. Anyway, what’s all. I’ve run out of things to write about, so thank you very much for reading, and another one will come out next week.

Next up: The McLaren MSO HS
