Does the M4 CSL deserve the “CSL” badge?

The CSL badge is one of the more important badges that belong in the BMW M history, The move of putting it on a G82 M4 is a bold move, or is it?

Let us go back in time to understand where it all started. In 1973 BMW made the 3.0 CSL which essentially was a racecar from European Championships made road legal. The 3.0 CSL had won six European Championships, one of the best times on the Nürburgring for a coupe in 1973 and it was also BMW’s first Art Car. It definitely was an important car.

With a maximum output of 206 Horsepower from a 3.2l inline 6-cylinder, this car was definitely wasn’t just about the power, the car weighed only 1,270 kilograms. It was light, nimble and agile, with power never being a big problem as it had a ratio of 6.1 kg per horsepower. Not to mention it also had a top speed of 220 km/h. It deserved the Competition, Sport, Lightweight badge.

From the stats, no doubt The M4 CSL deserves this badge. With 550 Horsepower going to the rear wheels, weighing only 1,625 Kilograms and being 40 kilograms lighter than a standard M4, it is truly a lightweight coupe. It also has a lap time of 7:20.207 on Nürburgring (full lap), which is, by far, the fastest BMW production car. It has a much better ratio of 2.95 kg per horsepower than compared to the 3.0 CSL. It is one that no objection deserves the CSL badge, surely doesn’t look like a very special car but true enthusiasts know it is.

With it being 50 years of BMW M, this is a great way of celebrating it and also the M3 Touring is one of the best wagons on the market now. BMW has a big contribution in making high performance saloons and coupes helping the car community, hope that BMW stay like this and keep contributing to this segment.

I’d say that BMW is back on point these days, having lost the plot for a bit. On point, that is until the seat heater subscriptions begin. I’m glad I’m not in the market for one. I’d have to be “removed” from the dealership the day my seat heaters get erroneously turned off.

I think BMW’s coming out with so many M cars this year is because it’s the M division’s 50 birthday.
