Barcelona Practice Analysis

The upgrade war has well and truly begun however the changes in the cars have not had a massive impact on which cars take which positions…

Mercedes – The Silver Arrows once again are displaying pace in FP2 with Russell and Lewis in P2 and P3 respectively. Last race weekend the same happened and qualifying was not successful so it could be meaningless – at least they are not porpoising as much.

Ferrari – Another track, another set of fast laps for Ferrari. Leclerc topped the timesheets in both of the sessions with his teammate P2 in FP1 and P4 in FP2 at his home track.

Red Bull – For once, Verstappen was not the fastest driver in practice, taking P2 in FP1 and P5 in FP2. Perez only managed to run in FP2 after Juri Vips took his seat, P7 for Perez.

Alpine – In what seems to be a recurring theme, Alpine are rathe quick in practice, particularly that of Alonso in P6 in FP2.

Ocon was also rather successful with P9.

Aston Martin – The Green Bull seems to be controversially quick, something that has been associated with the Silverstone-based team in previous years. Putting the somewhat similar design aside, their grid position has not really changed, P8 for Vettel and P13 for Stroll in FP2.

Haas – From all the hype at the start of the season, we have reverted to barely mentioning Haas. They have been going quickly but not massively so: P10 for Schumacher and P12 for Magnussen in FP2.

AlphaTauri – The Red Bull sister team have once again not excited the world of Formula One, Tsunoda did briefly suffer from a mechanical issue in FP1 but took P14 in FP2 with Gasly taking P11.

McLaren – Limited running for Norris in FP2 after a floor change leaving him in last, he did manage P7 in FP1. Ricciardo was not all that successful with P15 in FP2.

Alfa Romeo – Once again Alfa Romeo we’re not driving all that quickly despite bringing Robert Kubica in for FP1. Bottas and Zhou were equally matched with P16 and P17.

Williams – It does not seem that 2022, once again, is not Williams’ year with their cars being at the back of the field with Albon and Latifi in P18 and P19 bringing up the rear.
