For the first time in five years, the driver who started on pole in Monaco did not win in a race that provided excitement in more ways than one.
The race was heavily affected by rain with the start delayed by almost an hour due to the heavy rainfall but the entire race was not run on wet tyres, how did the teams fare in this race of strategy…
Red Bull – Today, Perez became the most successful Mexican driver with his third race win and his first in Monaco. His teammate joined him on the podium with P3.
Ferrari – What it could have been for Ferrari with their drivers locking out the front row but some questionable strategy left Sainz in P2 and Leclerc in P4. I’m sure the atmosphere will be so friendly in their debrief.
Mercedes – Another top five finish for Mr George ‘Consistency’ Russell still making him the only driver to finish every race in the top five. His teammate had a frustrated race stuck behind Alonso leaving him in P8.
McLaren – Once again, Ricciardo failed to make any headway in Monaco (but wasn’t lapped by his teammate this time) with P13. Norris drove a strong race for P6.
Alpine – A positive race weekend for Alpine however only one of their cars made it into the points. Both Ocon and Alonso had periods where they really held everyone up – most notably Alonso on Hamilton. Ocon came in P12 and Alonso P7.
Alfa Romeo – A race of two halves for Alfa Romeo with Zhou in second to last place with P16 whereas Bottas scored points in P9.
Aston Martin – A mediocre showing from team Silverstone after Stroll managed to spin under the safety car necessitating an extra pit stop and putting him P14. Vettel scored a point in P10.
AlphaTauri – Gasly showed promise for AlphaTauri as the first driver to switch to intermediates but only managed P11. Tsunoda caused many yellow flags towards the end and ended up last of the finishers in P17.
Williams – A poor day for Williams with Albon being forced to retire and Latifi coming P15 after a spin and some slow pace.
Haas – It was even worse for Haas than for any other team with Magnussen being forced to retire and Schumacher having a sizeable crash bringing out the red flag meaning that neither car finished.
