Qualifying Roundup

Not much happened in qualifying today in Jeddah. Only a seven time world champion not getting past Q1, a massive crash and a new pole sitter. Going through the teams one by one yesterday worked well so I think I’ll do that again, ok?

Aston Martin – A team that had a pretty unremarkable qualifying with Stroll P15 and Hulkenberg P18. They were marginally ahead of Williams and like them are proving the point that Mercedes powered cars really are not that competitive despite what Toto may say.

Williams – Latifi brought out the first red flag of the session after crashing in Q1 but salvaged P19 after Tsunoda failed to set a lap time. It was not the most thrilling qualifying for Albon with him not making it to Q2 and finishing P17.

AlphaTauri – Only managed to get one car out on the track after a cooling issue for Tsunoda. Gasly made it all the way to Q3 and starts in P9 which is a solid performance for him.

Alpine – Both of the Alpine cars made it through comfortably to Q3. Alonso took P7 and Ocon took P5, sandwiching the Mercedes of Russell. An impressive performance for the team I am sure you will agree.

Alfa Romeo – Only one of their cars made it to Q3, that being the car of Bottas who made it to P8. Rookie Zhou came in P13 ahead of both Aston Martins and Williams.

McLaren – An improvement on last week’s dismal showing for the team in papaya with Norris and Ricciardo taking P11 and P12. The only way is up for them now, maybe Q3 next time out?

Haas – Another exceptional performance for Magnussen with him taking P10 was overshadowed in Haas related news with Schumacher’s dramatic crash in Q2. Still little news on his condition but it has been confirmed he is not racing tomorrow but has been deemed ‘physically fine’.

Ferrari – It is not a surprise now but both Leclerc and Sainz were fast and took P2 and P3, losing out on pole by a slim margin to Sergio Perez. That car is still rapid and looks amazing while doing it.

Red Bull – The first pole position of his career for Sergio Perez after 215 races (the longest wait of any driver). Max Verstappen slots in behind the Ferraris in P4 – which I’m sure he’s absolutely delighted about.

Mercedes – Shocking news from Mercedes with Hamilton out of Q1 starting P16 on the grid. His sensational teammate George Russell qualified ten places ahead of him in P6 (also ahead of Valtteri which I’m sure makes Mercedes happy). Is a podium possible for them tomorrow?
