Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix Debrief

It was an exciting race today in Imola, a race in which the outcome could not have been predicted. A race in which many teams had results that were surprising even if they were not due to the conditions…

Red Bull – The first 1-2 for Red Bull since Malaysia 2016, with Verstappen converting his pole position into a race win (he has won every race he has finished this year). Perez also had a strong race where he put intense pressure on Charles Leclerc and took P2.

Ferrari – A home race they will want to forget after Sainz didn’t manage to complete one lap. Leclerc didn’t fare much better after a controversial fastest-lap-chasing tyre change and an incident with the barriers left him P6.

Mercedes – A race of two halves for Mercedes with one driver nine places ahead of the other (Hamilton gained a place following Ocon’s penalty). Russell performed superbly making up seven places over the course of the race, continuing his streak of finishing every race this year in the top ten with a P4 finish. Hamilton came in a dissatisfied P13.

Alfa Romeo – A relatively successful race for Alfa with Zhou in P15 and Bottas in P5. In the closing stages of the race Bottas tussled with Mercedes driver Russell (wouldn’t he have been smug if he had been successful) but the Mercedes held firm.

Williams – Unfortunately, little performance from the Williams with Albon in P11 and Latifi in P16. Albon did a strong job holding up Gasly and Hamilton but points never came.

Aston Martin – Their best race of the season thus far with both drivers scoring points putting them 9th in the Constructors’ Championship. Vettel drove well in P8 and Stroll battled well with Hamilton for P10.

Haas – More points for Haas from Magnussen in P9 however Schumacher did not perform all that well coming home in P17 – what happened there?

AlphaTauri – Tsunoda continued his theme of success this weekend with a strong P7. Gasly faired worse after being stuck in a DRS train and couldn’t move up from P12.

McLaren – Another team with performances of two halves. After an opening lap collision with Sainz, Ricciardo spent the majority of the race at the back but was the first to try out the slick tyres. Norris had a much more impressive weekend with another podium at Imola after Leclerc’s incident.

Alpine – Not the most successful weekend for Alpine after the race yielded them no points. Alonso retired on the sixth lap after the majority of the sidepod came away. Ocon ended the race in P14 after a five second penalty for unsafe release.
