Miami Qualifying Roundup

Qualifying for the Miami Grand Prix has thrown up some surprises, no major incidents, but some shocks in the lap time department did come…

Williams – It feels that Williams have made backwards steps this year as they ended up the slowest team and couldn’t make it out of Q2, Albon P18 and Latifi P19.

Alpine – A weekend Alpine would like to forget as it seems that the pace they show never materialises. Ocon failed to set a time after cracking his chassis in an FP3 crash and Alonso failed to make Q2, starting the race in P11.

Haas – Not one of Haas’ most successful weekends but not quite in the doldrums of last season. There were no extenuating circumstances at play here, just a lack of pace putting Magnussen P16 and Schumacher P15.

Alfa Romeo – Once again, Alfa Romeo seem to be a team with a real divide, Zhou in P17 after encountering traffic and then a quick lap from Bottas put him ahead of both Mercedes in P5.

McLaren – Quite why Daniel Ricciardo is struggling so much at McLaren is yet to be seen but the best he could manage was P14 whereas his teammate made it into Q3 and starts P8.

Aston Martin – I cannot fathom that this has happened, but Lance Stroll is P10 when his five-time world champion teammate is in P13 and not in Q3, how?

AlphaTauri – A successful day at the stadium for AlphaTauri with both cars reaching Q3. Tsunoda in P9 and Gasly showing his class in P7.

Mercedes – Porpoising problems plague Mercedes. These issues caused George Russell (who topped the timesheets in FP2) to fail to make Q3 and have his worst qualifying performance of the year taking P12. Hamilton did have a more successful time with P6 but was pipped by Bottas.

Red Bull – Despite a lack of running in practice, Red Bull were rather fast in Miami. Verstappen had a shot at pole but going wide cost him and left him with P3. Perez slots in behind with P4.

Ferrari – Is there a track they are not strong at? The dominant force this season strikes again with a front row lockout. Leclerc leads with yet another pole position.
