Death of a McLaren: The 720S has been discontinued

McLaren officially declares that it has stopped production of the 720S, a key model in its lineup, at the end of 2022. The next step for the British luxury sports car brand, however, remains unclear.

While speaking to Automotive News at a media event last month, Nicolas Brown, President of the Americas region for McLaren, remained tight-lipped about the upcoming vehicle, which has yet to be publicly displayed. Brown did mention that deposits had already been placed by customers, despite the automaker not revealing any details about the vehicle.

Brown said, “They’re anticipating that it will be a refinement of 720. They understand that it’s not a next-generation, all-new, ground-up vehicle. They have started to put deposits down with dealers, although we haven’t said anything.”

Although the automaker has not disclosed any specifics about the vehicle, it has already been sold out until deep into 2024. The 720S made its debut at the 2017 Geneva auto show and entered production later that year, replacing the 650S and becoming McLaren’s first-ever car replacement since its inception in 2010.

The 720S also resulted in the creation of a convertible version. Additionally, McLaren launched the 765LT and 765LT convertible, both powerful, lightweight, and limited-run models that were in such high demand that McLaren was unable to deliver them to all of its customers. The production of the 765LT coupe has ended, while the convertible is still being produced but is being phased out, according to a McLaren spokesperson.

According to Pietro Frigerio, dealer principal of McLaren Newport Beach in Irvine, California, the 720S is still highly coveted in his area, even in the face of competition from other luxury sports car brands.

Frigerio said, “It will be something different but not completely.” However, he has already received orders from his customers for the upcoming vehicle, indicating their high expectations.
