Prodrive tease “P25” Impreza project

Prodrive has put a post out on Instagram teasing a “P25” project. The Code is outlined with the distinct shape of a 2 door GC Impreza. The Post tells us that something will be revealed on the 25 of May.

Now everything from this point is an assumption, but let’s start with some sound ones. The project is probably going to revolve around the Subaru Impreza. The “P25” could be a reference to the Impreza P1, which first hit the WRC stage in 1997, 25 years ago. The car which was developed by Prodrive one the constructors’ championship, and came second in the drivers’ championship (being beaten by the legendary Tommi Mäkinen). It also struck a chord with the public, and in 2000 Prodrive produced 1000 P1 road cars. I don’t think Prodrive would be making another 1000 cars, and I believe this is probably a one-off, maybe we will get 25 if we are lucky.

The other question is what is it? It could be a complete re-imagination, or a continuation line of cars, but I believe it will be a high-end restomod, to the likes of Kimera Automobili EVO37. It will probably have really high retail, much beyond what the clientele of the original P1 would pay, if not just be a promotional prototype.

Next, we come to specs. Nothing is known about this, but I have 2 theories of what could be under the bonnet of this reborn Impreza.

Theory 1 is a singer like an Engine rebuild. The EJ20 would undergo thorough scrutiny and reengineering to be made as efficient as possible while still maintaining the character of the original unit. I’d Expect around 350hp, which has been done on the EJ20 and would bring the car to fight the new crop of super hatches, the most similar cars we have today to the homologations specials of old.

Theory 2 is a modern swap, from the last STi in the UK. This would probably be turned up to make a little more power too, but otherwise left pretty standard. I’d also say this would make 350+hp.

But who knows? This is all speculation so far, So all you need to remember is to tune in to Prodrive’s Instagram on Wednesday the 25th of May.

Thank you for reading.

350 seems a tad low on the power end. I’m thinking something akin to 400-430 range. At 350 stock internals can be used. Get to 400 and it requires new go-fast goodies on inside. Prodrive doesn’t play. Given this last criterion, I’m guessing Prodrive will be a bit more audacious.
