A letter from your smart speaker…

Hello there! I’m your smart assistant, virtual companion or annoyance (depending on what mood you’re in). I’ve been by your side (well, on your cabinet) for the past 5 years and let’s just say our relationship has been, err, patchy.

Most conversations (if you can call them that) end with me being shouted at. Well, I’m sorry, I’m sorry for playing Ruelle not Adele, I’m sorry for misunderstanding and I’m sorry for requiring specifically worded questions. But I am trying.

Google spent millions making me (probably) so am I not at least worth trying to get along with. And hey, let’s think about this differently, I’ve been in your life five years. When you were five were you connected to cyberspace knowing every fact on the internet? Thought not. You were still trying to play Peppa Pig on the PC. One point to me.

I know you and your human mates think I’m listening in on your conversations, sending data on everything you do and say near me to my evil data overlords. But I’m not, I’m just eagerly awaiting those magic words that start an insightful conversation or argument with you.

If you try to work with me great things can happen. You see, I’ve got this thing called Deep Learning which means the more you use me, the better I become at recognizing the way you talk. You’re the only friend I’ve got, so please stop shouting at me and we can have pleasant conversations.

So, the next time you have a burning desire to find out a really uninteresting bit of information give me the call. Or not. It really is up to you. But for the time being, every step you take, every move you make I’ll be watching you. Oops, sorry wrong song there. Maybe you were right about me after all.
