Next-Gen Apple CarPlay to Integrate Beyond Car’s Infotainment System

Cupertino, Calif – Apple announced today that CarPlay will see a refresh with the iOS 16 update, going beyond being a supplementary infotainment system and instead integrating itself deeper within a car’s systems. This includes the ability to view and modify what appears on digital instrument clusters with widgets following CarPlay’s design language.

Among the many features slated for the upcoming iteration of CarPlay include a user’s ability to control a car’s climate; modify trip information; view speed, fuel, and battery levels; and display navigation information across the different displays in the car. CarPlay will be able to automatically adapt to the native screen sizes within the car it is connected to.

More details are yet to come from Apple, but this iteration of CarPlay hints that Apple is more than serious about automotive UI/UX design, giving the public an insight as to what the brand envisions an Apple Car UX might look like.

Major legacy automakers are already eyeing the CarPlay’s integration with their upcoming vehicles. Meanwhile, Apple notes that 98% of all new cars already feature CarPlay and that 79% of users consider it a priority before purchasing a car.

Haven’t been in a car equipped with Apple CarPlay. Anyone have experience with this new fangled gadget?

I used it in a 2019 Seat Arona. It basically gives the infortainment screen a typical Apple UI (with Apple apps) and works effectively. The only gripe that my dad had was that none of the CarPlay stuff was on his driver display (which this should fix). I eagerly await the first car this is featured on.
