Is Sony really going to make an electric car?
At this year’s consumer electronics show Sony had two electric concept cars to show off, the Vision-S that we saw last year, and a new SUV known as the Vision-S 02.
The cars seem fairly impressive for a first attempt, with both featuring two electric motors making a combined 536bhp.
As you’d expect, they’re also packed with the latest technology. There are five touch screens spanning the full width of the dash as well as a sixth haptic touch screen lower down in the centre console. All of these screens are powered by the cars built in 5G connection to make sure you always have the latest entertainment, music, and navigation info.
We still don’t know if any of these cars will ever be available to buy, or if they simply plan to supply some of the parts to other manufacturers, but the firm has said that they will launch a new operating company in Spring 2022 called Sony Mobility Inc.
During the announcement Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony’s CEO, chairman, and president, said “We believe Sony is well-positioned as a creative entertainment company to redefine mobility.” and that they are “exploring a commercial launch of Sony’s EV”.
With cars getting more advanced technology, combined with the switch from internal combustion to electric motors, it’s no wonder electronics makers like Sony, Apple, and Huawei are entering the automotive industry.
