2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class: Superscreen and Ambient Lighting

An E-mmersive experience

Mercedes-Benz has provided a sneak peek at the interior of the upcoming 2024 E-Class Sedan. The new sedan is expected to hit dealerships later in the year, but car enthusiasts are already excited about the new interior and dash design.

While the interior of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan may seem familiar at first glance with its vast expanse of screens in a single module, it boasts a new feature that distinguishes it from its predecessor: the Superscreen. Unlike the Hyperscreen, which incorporates the infotainment screen and passenger screen apparatus with the instrument cluster, the Superscreen features a freestanding digital cluster that stands vertically and alone, set apart from the angled screens.

The triple-screen interior is only an optional upgrade, but the standard dash layout will include a free-standing screen in the center that appears to float above the trim laid below it, similar to the S-Class’ dash.

A small number of buttons are positioned below the Superscreen, but the current E-Class’ tactile toggle switches and roller knobs have been replaced by a fully digital interface. In keeping with Mercedes-Benz’s focus on technology, the new E-Class features many new digital toys to play with, including a new “Active Ambient Lighting” system that coordinates the ambient lighting in the cabin with the music being played over the audio system. Mercedes has developed software that can change the lighting according to the beat of the music.

In addition to the lighting system, Burmester 4D surround sound will be available in the new E-Class. So while the beat of the music appears in light form as if you are part of a Windows Media Player “now playing” scree, the sound transducers in the seat backrests will immerse you in an audio experience that vibrates you with the beat of the music.

The E-Class will be capable of running third-party apps on its infotainment system at launch, including TikTok, Angry Birds, Webex by Cisco, Zoom, and the Vivaldi web browser. There’s a selfie video camera in the interior that can transmit a feed over the vehicle’s built-in 5G network.

Mercedes has also introduced a “visual shield” for the passenger screen, which is similar to what Jeep does with its passenger screen to prevent the driver from being distracted. The “dual light control” tech ensures that the driver can’t see the screen with their peripheral vision.

Car enthusiasts will have to wait until later in the year for the new E-Class to be fully revealed, but it is expected to hit dealerships by the end of 2023.
